Podcasters, Don’t Forget Your Blogging Skills

If you’re not seeing the traffic you want to your site, have you considered it may be due to your blogging skills, or lack thereof?

You’ve finished your show, mixed it down so it sounds right, and got it loaded to your site and ready for the rss feeds and podcatchers to pick it up. Then you title your post, maybe a couple of words saying to the fact, “here it is,” and you hit Publish.

Blogging may not be your forte and we’re not asking you to become J.K. Rowling, but by considering a few simple tips you can make your show a little more SEO friendly (Search Engine Optimization).

Start With a Good Title

The title of your blog post is the first thing search engines see. Depending on the title of your show, you may need to add a few keywords to make it a little more findable. For example, let’s say your show is called, The Hairy Otter Show and it’s a weekly comedy show that has nothing to do with otters (I just made that name up, feel free to run with it if you wish).

Most of the time you’ll post your show title as, The Hairy Otter Show, Episode 6. Well, that’s fine if your show’s about otters or hairy otters but it’s not going to do much to pull in any new listeners looking for comedies. In this case, add two words. The Hairy Otter Show, Episode 6 – Comedy Podcast. Now the search engines have something more to latch onto, the phrase “comedy podcast.” Think of what phrases your fans would use to look for a show like yours.

Keywords

After the title of the show, the next item ranked will be the repetition of the keywords in your first few sentences. What I like to do is just start with the title again followed by, “in this weeks podcast…” What you’re doing is establishing your keywords in both the title and the opening sentence.

If you’re using WordPress, download the plugin, All-In-One SEO Pack. This will add an extra widget to your New Post dashboard allowing you to easily get your title, description and keywords into your meta data.

Don’t know what meta data is? Don’t worry about it. Just know that part of it is code that works in the background to help the search engines find you.

Writing the Body of the Copy – The Part Where You Get Stuck

Here’s the part that most podcasters dread the most – actually writing something. Maybe you’re not sure what to say or afraid of repeating yourself on each post. Here’s an old editorial trick that might help you out.

  • Tell them what you’re going to say.
  • Say it.
  • Tell them what you just said.

It may sound a little repetitious, but with practice you’ll find this works pretty well. Plus there are added SEO benefits to doing it this way.

Let’s use the Hairy Otter example. Assume there are four segments to the show: an opening bit, a newsy roundtable, a guest and then the wrap up.

Tell them what you’re going to say:

The Hairy Otter Show, Episode 6 – Comedy Podcast. In this weeks show, I talk about blah, blah, blah. We’ll have our weekly roundtable and then we’ll be joined by blah blah.

Say it.

Today I’m discussing blah, blah
Have your ever…?

Weekly Roundtable
We’ll be joined by blah and blah, talking about blah blah.

Today’s Interview
We’ll be joined on Skype by blah blah, where I’ll ask the question…

Tell them what you just said.

So join me, blah and blah and special guest, blah as we probe todays topic…
